ArcelorMittal Liberia has officially dedicated the rehabilitated bridge located at Kilometer 2.5 of its railway track, connecting the companyโs concession to Buchanan City.
The bridge, which is a crucial infrastructure for local communities, logging companies, and the transport of iron ore, had been facing severe structural issues that threatened its collapse since it was built by LAMCO.
In 2018, visible cracks were discovered on the bridge, prompting immediate concerns from ArcelorMittal and the Ministry of Public Works. A subsequent report in 2019 confirmed the worsening condition of the bridge, warning of the imminent danger it posed to both public safety and the company’s mining operations.
In response, ArcelorMittal engaged with the government, local stakeholders, and engineers to address the crisis. By 2023, AFCONS, a subcontracting firm, was brought in to carry out the necessary repairs. The rehabilitation project, which cost approximately US$700,000, was completed in February 2024.
The newly rehabilitated bridge ensures continued safe passage for motorists, pedestrians, and iron ore shipments, solidifying its role as a vital transportation link between Buchanan and the companyโs concession, while securing the ongoing operations of ArcelorMittal Liberia.
