83-Year-Old Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara Declares He Will Run for Fourth Term After Promising to Step Down

The third-term president of Ivory Coast, H.E. Alassane Dramane Ouattara, age 83, declared on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, that he will be a major contender in the upcoming October 25, 2025 presidential election even though he promised not to run for the highest seat anymore after he was elected for his third term in 2020.

Surprisingly to many political pundits in Ivory Coast and cross the region, President Ouattara said in a video via his Twitter or ‘X’ account that he will be a presidential candidate. “The constitution of our country allows me to serve another term, and my health permits it. I am running for office because our country is facing unprecedented security, economic, and monetary challenges that require experience to manage,” Ouattara said on X.

Today’s presidential-run announcement by President Ouattara has stirred political uproar and mixed reactions across Ivory Coast. The opposition in Ivory Coast has declared Ouattara’s fourth term “unacceptable” and a recipe for ‘pre-election crises amid public alarm of constitutional violations.

This month, the African Peoples’ Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), led by former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo and the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI) formally launched the “Enough is Enough” movement to oppose Ouattara’s fourth term.

President Ouattara took over the cocoa-rich Republic as President since 2010. Ouattara further claimed in his latest X video as to why he could not keep his promise of not running for a fourth term: “Duty sometimes transcends a promise that was made in good faith. This is why after thoughtful consideration, and in all conscience, I’m announcing today that I’ve decided to be a candidate in the presidential election of 25 October 2025.”
