Magistrates of the National Elections Commission (NEC) have dismissed reports suggesting they are pushing for the reinstatement of suspended Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah, calling the claims entirely false and misleading.
Reacting to a publication by the Daily Observer newspaper on February 6, 2025, and a broadcast on the Truth Breakfast Show the following day, the magistrates strongly disapproved of what they termed “baseless accusations.” The reports alleged that 18 NEC magistrates were advocating for Lansanah’s return, a claim the group has categorically denied.
In a statement, the magistrates made it clear that they have never engaged in any discussions or taken any actions to influence the government’s decision regarding Lansanah’s suspension. They emphasized their commitment to neutrality and professionalism, especially as the Commission prepares for the crucial Senatorial By-Election in Nimba County.
The magistrates stressed that the NEC operates within a legal framework that governs its functions and decisions. They clarified that matters concerning the status of any official, including the Chairperson, fall under the jurisdiction of the appropriate legal and administrative bodies, not election magistrates.
Denouncing the reports as an attempt to mislead the public, the group criticized both the Daily Observer and the Truth Breakfast Show for failing to provide credible evidence. They urged media institutions to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying information before publishing or airing claims that could undermine public confidence in the Commission.
The magistrates further demanded an immediate retraction of the false reports, warning against the spread of misinformation that could damage the credibility of the electoral process. They reaffirmed their dedication to fairness and transparency in all electoral matters, vowing not to be distracted by unfounded allegations.
