The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating GSM companies and regulators concluded a public hearing on Monday, February 17.
The session focused on persistent network connectivity issues in Maryland County and other affected regions, with key stakeholders, including the CEO of Lonestar MTN, Commissioners of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), and the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, present for discussions.
Hon. Ivar Jones, Chair of the Ad-hoc Committee, said the hearing was aimed at conducting a thorough review of GSM companies’ operations, the LTA’s regulatory role, and the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications’ oversight. He emphasized that the committee’s responsibility is to ensure transparency and fairness in the telecommunications sector while addressing consumer concerns about service quality.
The discussions centered on the effectiveness of regulatory oversight and whether GSM providers are meeting their obligations to subscribers. Jones stressed that the hearing allowed open dialogue between regulators, service providers, and the public. He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to maintaining integrity and fairness throughout the process, stating that all concerns raised would be given the necessary attention.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the House Press Bureau is expected to provide further updates. The House has reaffirmed its commitment to working with key stakeholders to improve telecommunications services and address network challenges affecting consumers across Liberia.
