Monrovia – The House of Representatives has established a specialized committee to investigate and clarify lawmakers’ salaries following growing public concern about legislative earnings. The decision comes after Bong County District 6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah called for greater transparency regarding how much legislators are paid.
During a recent session, Briggs Mensah revealed that her monthly salary is $6,651, challenging widespread claims that lawmakers earn $15,000 or more. She explained that her earnings are divided between Liberian and U.S. dollars, pushing back against public perceptions that legislators receive inflated salaries.
She argued that while lawmakers face public criticism over their pay, officials in some government ministries earn significantly more. According to her, certain ministry directors receive between $15,000 and $20,000 per month, far exceeding what members of the legislature earn.
In a formal communication to her colleagues, Briggs Mensah urged that all lawmakers’ salaries be made public. She stressed that such a move would enhance government accountability and address long-standing questions about compensation in the legislative branch.
In response to her call, the House of Representatives agreed to establish a special committee tasked with reviewing salary structures for lawmakers and comparing them with other senior government officials. The committee will investigate the accuracy of salary figures and report its findings.
