The Government of Liberia has initiated a diplomatic démarche with the United States in response to reports suggesting that Liberia may face U.S. visa restrictions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, is seeking clarification after learning of the potential restrictions.
During a session before the Senate, Minister Nyanti expressed surprise at the reports and emphasized that Liberia had not received any formal communication from the U.S. Government regarding the matter. She further noted that the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia has also denied having any official information on the subject.
In the démarche, Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined why the country should not be placed on the so-called “yellow list,” should the reports prove accurate. Minister Nyanti stressed that the Ministry has not received any official communication about an international passport ban.
Speaking before the Senate Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Security, and Intelligence, Minister Nyanti urged caution in accepting unverified information and reassured lawmakers that Liberia is making significant strides to improve diplomatic relations and passport security.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, she emphasized that no official communication has been received confirming Liberia’s potential placement on such a list. “I stress the point if it is indeed true,” Nyanti stated.
