In an open letter to President Joseph N. Boakai on March 18, 2025, Elder Gabriel Monger Zarwea expressed serious concerns about alleged nepotism and lack of transparency within the management of Roberts International Airport (RIA).
Zarwea claims that Mr. Jero Mendscode, the Managing Director of RIA, has appointed his own son as Chief of Staff and awarded a cleaning contract to his wife without following proper government procedures for contract allocation.
If true, Mr. Zarwea argues that these actions undermine the principles of fairness and transparency that President Boakai’s administration stands for. He asserts that such practices contribute to an environment of favoritism, which harms merit-based competition and weakens the integrity of public institutions. The activist calls on President Boakai to investigate the matter thoroughly and take corrective actions to ensure accountability in government appointments and contract awards.
The open letter emphasizes the need for decisive action to maintain public trust in the administration, stressing that Boakai’s leadership should not tolerate these issues. Mr. Zarwea also mentioned that additional concerns regarding RIA’s management would be brought to the President’s attention in the near future.
Mr. Zarwea’s letter highlights the ongoing fight against corruption and nepotism in Liberia, stressing the importance of transparency in governance and the need for all citizens to work toward a fair and just society.
