Commerce and Industry Minister Magdalene Ellen Dagoseh has called for stronger safety measures at the Monrovia Industrial Park (MIP) following a fatal explosion at Sethi Brothers’ Steel Factory that left one person dead. The incident, which raised serious concerns about workplace safety standards, has prompted renewed scrutiny of industrial operations in the area.
During a visit to the park on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Minister Dagoseh emphasized that while the government values the job opportunities provided by companies operating within the MIP, the safety and well-being of workers and nearby residents cannot be compromised. “We came here immediately after the incident and we are back to express sympathy. But more importantly, there must be enhanced safety to prevent any recurrence,” she said.
The minister also extended condolences to the bereaved family and the management of Sethi Brothers. Her visit, alongside Deputy Minister for Industry Andrew Paygar, included a tour of several major industrial facilities, including Tiba Industrial Group, Founni Brothers Biscuit Factory, and Silver Automotive.
Dagoseh used the occasion to urge all companies within the park to uphold their corporate social responsibilities and ensure that their operational environments remain clean and safe. “These companies are providing bread for our people, but giving back to the country must not be neglected,” she stated.
In response, company representatives welcomed the minister’s visit and pledged to take the necessary steps to address the safety and environmental concerns raised. They also expressed their commitment to continued engagement with the Commerce Ministry to ensure improved working conditions and industrial standards across the park.
