Journalist Obed Gibah Raises Alarm

A Liberian journalist has raised serious concerns over what he describes as direct threats and intimidation from a senior officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP). The incident, which occurred early Monday evening, has stirred fears about the increasing misuse of police authority and its implications for freedom of the press and civil liberties in the country.According to the journalist, Christopher Kulee Vafley, also known by his operational alias “R4,” arrived at his office unexpectedly with a team of police officers.

During the visit, Officer Vafley allegedly issued threats, vowing to “come after” the journalist using his influence and resources. The journalist, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, emphasized that the threats were serious and unwarranted, and that there was no formal complaint or official charge presented at the time of the confrontation.“If anything happens to me, Christopher Kulee Vafley must be held accountable,” the journalist declared in a public statement. “This level of intimidation is unacceptable. As a journalist, I will not be silenced, and I am taking all necessary steps to ensure my safety.

”This incident brings renewed focus to a growing pattern of police overreach in Liberia, where citizens and professionals alike have raised alarm over forceful arrests, harassment, and threats carried out without due process. Human rights advocates have long argued that such behavior not only violates individual freedoms but also damages public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

Legal experts note that under both national and international law, individuals have a right to be informed of accusations against them. The absence of transparency and the use of threats without proper legal procedure not only endanger the lives of individuals but also risk creating a climate of fear detrimental to a functioning democracy.

This particular case is troubling not just because of the status of the target, a journalist whose job is to hold the powerful accountable, but because it reflects a deeper, systemic issue. The actions of Officer Vafley, if proven, would represent an abuse of power that undermines the very principles of justice and rule of law.Public outcry has already begun to build, with many calling for an independent investigation into the incident and broader reform within the LNP to curb arbitrary use of force and power. Calls are also growing for increased protection for journalists and whistleblowers who speak out against abuses.
