CDC Hails Supreme Court Ruling, Says it’s a Blow to Tyranny and Victory for Democracy

Monrovia, Liberia–The Supreme Court recent ruling that reinstated and legitimized embattled Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has been welcomed by many Liberians especially the opposition community. One of such opposition political parties that have been celebrating the Supreme Court’s verdict is the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).The CDC has described the court’s ruling as a monumental triumph for constitutional order and a stern rebuke of what the party calls “an illegal power grab.”

In a strongly worded statement issued just hours after the ruling, the CDC National Executive Committee called the decision a “resounding victory for the people, the Constitution, and Liberia’s fragile democracy,” while condemning what it characterized as a “coordinated, illegal attempt by a desperate minority, aided by state actors,” to unseat Koffa through unconstitutional means.“ This ruling serves as a deafening rejection of the constitutional coup attempted against the Speaker,” read the statement signed by CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo. “

The law is supreme, and no man is above it.”The party applauded Speaker Koffa for his “boldness, consistency, and deep loyalty to the rule of law,” while hailing him as a symbol of a new Liberia—one where the will of the people overrides political scheming.

The CDC also used the occasion to sharply criticize the administration of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, accusing it of tribalism, economic mismanagement, and a creeping authoritarianism. The statement warned that the government’s actions risk plunging the country into chaos, echoing past periods of national instability.“Mr. Boakai must desist immediately from the ongoing dismantling of Liberia’s democratic gains,” the CDC declared. “

The CDC will not sit idly by as our nation teeters on the edge.”The opposition further drew a contrast between President Boakai and former President George Manneh Weah, portraying Weah as a unifier and peaceful statesman. The statement further praised Weah for his restraint and patriotism during the 2023 political transition, despite what the CDC labeled as “betrayal and provocation.”

As political temperatures rise, the CDC called on Speaker Koffa to lead with “revolutionary grace” and work to unify the House beyond partisan lines. “This victory belongs not only to him or the CDC, but to every Liberian who believes in the rule of law,” the party stated.

According to the CDC, with this landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has not only settled a leadership dispute but also reaffirmed the primacy of the Constitution in Liberia’s evolving democracy. The nation now watches closely to see whether the government will comply peacefully with the court’s ruling and whether Speaker Koffa will be able to translate legal victory into legislative stability.
