Former First Lady Nancy B. Doe Passes Away

Monrovia, Liberia- Nancy B. Doe, former First Lady of Liberia and widow of the late President Samuel K. Doe, has died.

Her death was confirmed on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, by multiple sources, including her niece, Nancy Young.

According to Young, Mrs. Doe passed away in Monrovia following a prolonged illness.

Mrs. Doe served as Liberia’s First Lady from 1980 to 1990, during the presidency of her husband, Samuel K. Doe, who came to power through a military coup.

During her tenure, she was actively involved in charitable efforts and championed causes related to women’s and children’s welfare.

The Nancy B. Doe market on 8th street Sinkor in Monrovia was one of his initiative for women empowerment while serving as first lady of the country.

After President Doe was assassinated during the First Liberian Civil War, Mrs. Doe went into exile and had since lived a life largely away from the public eye.

Although an official statement from the family is still pending, tributes have begun to pour in from across Liberia, honoring her contributions to the nation and her enduring strength during some of its most difficult periods.
