Liberian House of Representatives Backs Nation’s Bid for UN Security Council Non-Permanent Seat

In a significant show of unity and diplomatic ambition, the House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia has formally declared its full support for the country’s bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term.

The official statement, released through the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nehker E. Gaye, emphasized the Legislature’s unwavering commitment to backing the Executive in its pursuit of this prestigious international position. The House lauded the initiative as a milestone in Liberia’s diplomatic evolution and a reflection of its steadfast dedication to global peace, multilateralism, and democratic governance.

“This historic bid marks a significant moment in Liberia’s diplomatic journey,” the statement reads, “and reflects the nation’s enduring commitment to global peace, security, multilateral cooperation, and democratic governance.”

Citing Liberia’s legacy in peacekeeping, post-conflict recovery, and regional stability, lawmakers argued that the country is well-suited to bring a unique and credible voice to the Council’s deliberations. They also highlighted the importance of amplifying the perspectives of smaller nations, particularly those in West Africa.

Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and the entire House pledged their support for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Liberia’s diplomatic missions abroad, and all international partners who are part of the campaign. Special commendation was given to Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Sarah Beyslow Nyanti and the country’s ambassadors for their strategic efforts in rallying support among UN member states.

The House called on the international community to endorse Liberia’s candidacy, pointing to the country’s longstanding contributions to peace, security, and democracy on the African continent and beyond.

“As representatives of the Liberian people, we affirm our collective commitment and readiness to support the Executive in all necessary diplomatic, legislative, and logistical undertakings to ensure the success of this bid,” the statement concluded.

The bid, if successful, would mark Liberia’s first term on the 15-member Council, a powerful body charged with maintaining international peace and security.
