CMC Condemns Government Statement as “Dangerous, Anti-Democratic, and Built on Lies”

Monrovia, May 25, 2025 The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has issued a scathing condemnation of a recent statement by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT), describing it as “dangerous, anti-democratic, and built on lies.”

The MICAT statement, allegedly targeting Bomi County Senator and ECOWAS Parliamentarian Edwin M. Snowe, drew the ire of CMC for what it described as a blatant attack on free speech and democratic values. The CMC’s press release, dated May 25, 2025, accuses the government of “reckless communication” and attempting to frame political disagreement as a national security threat.

“To publicly accuse a sitting Senator of plotting to undermine the state without verified evidence is both irresponsible and vindictive,” the CMC stated. “This is not just poor governance — it is state-sponsored intimidation, and it must not be normalized.”

The political advocacy group warned against government efforts to involve ECOWAS and international partners based on “unsubstantiated claims,” describing such moves as attempts to scapegoat and distract from internal failures.

In a direct message to the Boakai-led administration, CMC emphasized:

Political dissent is not sedition.

Criticizing those in power is a democratic right.

ECOWAS is not a propaganda tool for the ruling party.

Governance is about serving citizens, not silencing critics.

The group urged the Ministry of Information to retract the statement and issue an apology to the Liberian people. It also called on Liberians to remain vigilant and resist what it termed a “creeping culture of fear, distortion, and authoritarianism.”

“We in the CMC believe that no amount of propaganda can erase the truth, and no threats can silence the demand for justice, good governance, and accountable leadership,” the statement concluded.

CMC reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, civil liberties, and the rule of law, vowing to continue its role as a voice of reason and truth in Liberia’s political landscape.
