House of Representatives Considers Increase in Staff Salary and Creation of New Political Roles

The House of Representatives has begun reviewing a proposal aimed at increasing the salaries and benefits of legislative staff, along with establishing new political positions in the offices of lawmakers. This proposal was introduced during the 9th Day Sitting of the House’s 2nd Quarter, 2nd Session, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Hon. Anthony Williams, Representative of Maryland County Electoral District #2, formally submitted the initiative. His proposal seeks to address both compensation concerns and structural gaps within the legislative support system. He emphasized the importance of adjusting the salaries and benefits of key personnel, including staffers in Representatives’ offices, central administration, and Plenary secretarial staff. According to Rep. Williams, these individuals play essential roles in the legislative and representational duties of lawmakers, and better compensation would help attract and retain qualified professionals while enhancing the institution’s overall effectiveness.

Beyond salary adjustments, Rep. Williams suggested the creation of four new political support roles within each Representative’s office. These positions are intended to enhance engagement with various segments of the population and improve program delivery. The proposed roles include a Youth Coordinator to mobilize and support young people in areas such as education and civic responsibility, a Women Coordinator to advance gender-focused programs and inclusion, a Religious Coordinator to work with faith-based groups and promote ethical outreach, and a Disabled Coordinator to advocate for the rights and welfare of people with disabilities.

The proposal also includes the recommendation to create additional roles at the district level. These include a District Information Officer, a Coordinator for Disadvantaged District Youth, a District Scholarship Coordinator, and a District Security Coordinator. Hon. Williams described these roles as crucial for strengthening constituency representation, promoting inclusive governance, and aligning local services with modern administrative standards.

Following deliberations, the House Plenary voted to forward the proposal to the Committees on Ways, Means and Finance, and Rules, Order and Administration. These committees have been tasked with conducting a detailed review and are expected to present their findings within two weeks.
