In an effort to strengthen healthcare partnerships, representatives from the Liberia Midwives Association (LMA) convened with Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto in Monrovia.
The discussions were centered on enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the LMA, particularly aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes across Liberia.
During the meeting, LMA leaders have expressed concerns about their perceived marginalization within the health sector of the country and advocated for greater inclusion in leadership roles within the Nursing and Midwifery Association.
The Association also called for their representation on the Board of John F. Kennedy Hospital and highlighted the salary disparities that midwives face nationwide.
Moreover, the Association contributed insights from the recent International Day of Midwives celebrated in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, and provided updates on their visits to facilities in Montserrado.
According to them these visits geared towards connecting with midwives, offering on-the-ground mentorship, and reiterating their commitment to advocate for the needs of all midwives.
Despite the challenges they encounter, the LMA leadership expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s continued support and guidance.
They also recognized Minister Kpoto’s backing of the recent year-long specialized midwifery training program held in Kenya, which benefited numerous Liberian nurses.
In her reply, Minister Kpoto, an obstetrician-gynecologist, reaffirmed her dedication to promoting collaboration among healthcare professionals and encouraged unity within the sector.
However, midwives are group of health professional who cares for mothers and newborns around childbirth, a specialisation known as midwifery.
