In a major regulatory enforcement move, the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has officially released a list of 35 unauthorized higher learning institutions operating illegally across Liberia, ordering their immediate closure.
The announcement comes as part of NCHE’s intensified efforts to clean up the country’s higher education sector and protect students from unregulated academic programs that offer substandard or unrecognized credentials.
The institutions ranging from health science colleges to theological seminaries and management schools were found to be operating without accreditation, offering diploma, associate, bachelor’s, and even PhD programs outside the legal framework established by the Ministry of Education and NCHE.
According to the NCHE’s notice, these schools have been operating in violation of the Higher Education Law of Liberia. Students enrolled in the affected institutions have been advised to discontinue their studies and consult the NCHE for proper guidance on transitioning to accredited institutions.
Some of the institutions listed for immediate closure include:
• Mertu Institute of Health and Laboratory Sciences – 72nd Junction, Paynesville
• Christ Laborers School System – Pipeline Road, Paynesville
• Great Commission Christian University – Pipeline Road, Paynesville
• Elizabeth Medical Institute of Health Sciences – Mount Barclay, Montserrado County

The NCHE cautioned the public to avoid enrolling in any of the blacklisted institutions and emphasized that enforcement actions will continue against any unaccredited college or university offering degrees or certificates in Liberia.
This crackdown is expected to send a strong message to operators of unapproved institutions and reaffirm the NCHE’s commitment to upholding academic integrity and standardization in the country’s educational system.
The full list of the closed institutions can be accessed on the NCHE website or at their head office in Monrovia.
