Public Works Imposes Temporary Ban on Heavy Trucks to Protect Roads

Monrovia – The Ministry of Public Works has announced a temporary restriction on heavy goods vehicles exceeding 25 metric tons along key unpaved primary road corridors across Liberia.

The moratorium, issued on Thursday, July 3, will take effect from July 31 and remain in force until October 15, 2025.

According to the Ministry, the ban seeks to protect national infrastructure during the peak of the rainy season and prevent severe damage to road networks caused by overloaded trucks. The affected highways include the Ganta to Zwedru road, Zwedru to Kanweaken road, and Buchanan to Greenville road.

Other corridors under restriction are the Pleebo to Barclayville road, Salayea to Mendikorma road, and Brewerville to Bopolu road.

In a press release, the Ministry urged all drivers and owners of heavy vehicles to comply with the moratorium, warning that enforcement will be stringent, with the Liberia National Police and other national institutions providing full support to ensure adherence.

The Ministry emphasized that failure to comply could lead to legal consequences and vehicle impoundment.

It can be recalled that a similar restriction was imposed by the Ministry of Public Works during the tenure of the late Minister Manputu Nyanpan under former President George Weah’s administration.

Public Works says the measure is in line with its commitment to preserving road infrastructure for the safety and economic benefit of all Liberians.
