LLA Official Warns Against Inaccuracies in Customary Land Process

Rivercess County – Ezekiel B. Weah, Assistant Commissioner at the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), has stressed the importance of accuracy and consistency in the ongoing customary land formalization process, warning that misinformation and incomplete documentation could undermine the implementation of the Land Rights Law.

In an interview with Verity News, Mr. Weah expressed concern over recurring issues related to boundary identification and conflicting land claims, which he said are creating unnecessary delays and public confusion.

When communities provide inconsistent or inaccurate information about their land boundaries, it damages trust and slows down the entire process,” Weah said. “This is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly.”

He emphasized that precise boundary mapping and thorough documentation are essential for communities seeking to acquire Customary Land Deeds in line with the 2018 Land Rights Law.

Despite these challenges, Weah commended Rivercess County for its substantial progress in formalizing customary land ownership.

He noted that out of the county’s 34 clans, 11 have already received deeds, placing Rivercess among the leading counties in the country in terms of land rights implementation.

“This is a commendable achievement,” he noted. “Rivercess is setting an example for other counties.”

His remarks come as the Liberian government intensifies nationwide efforts to implement land reform laws aimed at securing community land tenure, promoting transparency, and reducing land-related conflicts.

Weah concluded by calling on local leaders, civil society actors, and community members to work together in maintaining the integrity of the process. “The success of customary land reform depends on collective action, accuracy, and transparency,” he said.
