Monrovia , Liberia ~ As the nation steps up its fight against the growing drug crisis, thousands of Liberians, mostly women, marched through the streets of Monrovia today in a peaceful protest against the proliferation of narcotics in the country. The march, aimed at petitioning the national government to take urgent action, drew attention from across the country ~ including from one of Liberia’s most high-profile entertainers.
Hip-co superstar Karwoudou Cole, popularly known as Bucky Raw, took to social media to share his personal journey and lend support to the cause. In a candid post, Bucky Raw acknowledged a troubled past, admitting he was deported from the United States for drug-related offenses.
“Yes, I got deported for possession with intent to deliver narcotics,” he wrote. “Since I’ve been in Liberia, I changed my life and rehabilitated myself for the better. If you see me with money or anything that money can buy, it’s not from drug dealing.”
The artist expressed appreciation for today’s demonstration and called out social media users who were quick to speculate or criticize those participating.
“Thank you to everyone for the march today. Just for us to do small march Facebook users want turn to detectives na,” he added.
Today’s demonstration is part of a wider public outcry over the increasing presence and abuse of drugs, especially among Liberian youth. Protesters called on the government to implement stronger enforcement, more rehabilitation programs, and better border control to stem the influx of illegal substances.
