Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has apprehended a man identified as Melvin D. Swen, 36, for impersonating a senior police officer in Monrovia.
According to police spokesperson Cecelia Clarke, Swen was not affiliated with the LNP despite being fully dressed in an official police uniform and carrying what appeared to be a legitimate badge and identification card.
For an extended period ~ possibly more than a year ~ Swen moved freely throughout the streets of Monrovia, confidently presenting himself as a “Chief Inspector” of the Liberia National Police. His convincing disguise reportedly allowed him to operate unnoticed.
However, his charade came to an end last evening when he was rushed to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital following an accident. Hospital staff, believing he was a police officer, alerted LNP authorities. A subsequent investigation revealed the shocking truth: Swen was never a member of the police force.
Authorities say Swen’s uniform, badge, and ID card appeared authentic, raising questions about how he obtained them and whether others may be involved. The LNP is currently investigating the matter further.
Police have not disclosed what charges Swen may face, but officials emphasize that impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious offense.
The Liberia National Police is urging citizens to report suspicious individuals posing as officers and has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the force.
