Liberian music sensation Franklin Edward Harris, popularly known as Kpanto, has publicly criticized the government’s recent decision to ban the use of shisha in the country. His remarks came just minutes after the Ministry of Health officially announced the prohibition on Thursday evening.
In a strongly worded post on his social media handle, Kpanto expressed frustration over what he sees as misplaced priorities by national authorities. He called on the government to channel the same energy used in banning shisha toward combating corruption, which he described as a far more dangerous threat to Liberia’s future.
“Banning shisha but can’t ban corruption that’s killing millions of dreams in lay country,” Kpanto wrote. “Funny people.”
The Ministry of Health’s decision to outlaw shisha, a flavored tobacco product commonly smoked through a hookah, comes amid growing health concerns. However, critics like Kpanto argue that deeper systemic issues ~ such as widespread corruption ~ deserve urgent and consistent attention.
Kpanto, known for using his platform to speak out on social issues, added that corruption remains one of the leading factors hindering progress and destroying opportunities for Liberia’s youth.
The government has yet to respond directly to Kpanto’s comments
