Monrovia, Liberia ~ President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has departed Liberia for the United States of America to participate in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The President’s trip will also include the hosting of the first-ever Liberia National Diaspora Conference, set to take place in Washington, D.C.
While in New York, President Boakai will join fellow Heads of State and Government, world leaders, and international partners to deliberate on global issues including peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation.
A major highlight of the President’s visit will be his address to the Plenary of the UN General Assembly. On the sidelines of the event, he is expected to engage in several high-level bilateral meetings with global leaders, development partners, and business executives. These discussions are aimed at bolstering Liberia’s international partnerships, attracting investment, and advancing the country’s national development agenda.
The President is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including members of the Cabinet and Legislature. Among them are Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Education Minister Jarso Maley Jallah, Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, EPA Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, and Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jerod Cole Bangalu. These officials will attend a range of side events, including thematic discussions on climate change, education, and international maritime law.
During the visit, President Boakai will also convene the inaugural Liberia National Diaspora Conference, a strategic initiative designed to strengthen ties between the government and the Liberian diaspora community. The conference will focus on mobilizing support for national development, promoting investment opportunities, and fostering long-term collaboration between Liberians at home and abroad.
Speaking prior to his departure, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to multilateralism and to playing an active role in shaping global responses to shared challenges. He also underscored the critical role the diaspora plays in Liberia’s socio-economic development, describing the upcoming conference as a “milestone in deepening national unity and participation.”
While President Boakai is away, the Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh, will coordinate Cabinet activities as Acting Chairman, working in consultation with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and the President via telephone.
The Liberian delegation is expected to return at the end of the month following the conclusion of all official engagements in the United States.
