World Bank, Health Ministry Launch Joint Review of Key Health Projects

A joint World Bank and Liberian government delegation has commenced a ten-day review of two major health projects aimed at strengthening Liberia’s healthcare delivery system.

The review began on September 22 and is expected to conclude on October 3, 2025.

The projects under review-Institutional Foundations to Improve Services for Health (IFISH) and the Health Security Project (HeSP)-are being implemented under Liberia’s One Health Platform.

The primary goal of the mission is to assess progress made under the two projects, which aim to enhance service delivery, build health system resilience, and improve national preparedness for health emergencies.

During the review meetings, the One Health Platform highlighted a number of key achievements, including the ongoing construction of the New Redemption Hospital, which is now 82.16% complete.

Scheduled for completion in December 2025, the new hospital facility will feature housing units, educational infrastructure, and modern diagnostic tools such as CT scan and MRI machines.

The delegation also noted that a national health worker census had been successfully completed. This data will inform a comprehensive workforce strategy and policy for Liberia’s health sector.

Additionally, 34 specialized nurses trained under the project have graduated and are ready for deployment, while 18 more will begin advanced training in Kenya in October 2025.

The World Bank, through the Ministry of Health, is preparing to construct three nursing skill laboratories in Bomi, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh counties, aimed at enhancing clinical training capacity.

Progress has also been recorded in the construction of 12 primary health facilities across six counties. These facilities are intended to expand access to essential healthcare in underserved areas.

Under the IFISH project, essential donations have been made to World Bank-supported facilities, including medicines, vaccines, reproductive and maternal health products, and vital medical equipment.

Healthcare workers have also received training in sexual and reproductive health services, which has contributed to improved maternal and neonatal outcomes in target regions.

The review delegation conducted on-site assessments at several key locations, including the New Redemption Hospital in Caldwell and the Environmental Protection Agency Laboratory in Mamba Point.

Other field visits included the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), key players in the One Health framework that integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

The World Bank Mission noted that the projects’ milestones demonstrate Liberia’s growing ability to deliver integrated and essential health services, especially in rural and underserved communities.

The mission emphasized that reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, strengthening the health workforce, and building resilient infrastructure remain top priorities of the IFISH and HeSP projects.

The One Health Platform overseeing these efforts includes the Ministry of Health, NPHIL, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a collaborative model aimed at holistic public health planning.
