The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has issued a firm warning to all its officers across the country to refrain from engaging in political activities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the institution’s neutrality and professional integrity.
In a release issued on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, is quoted as saying the warning comes from LIS Commissioner General, Col. Elijah F. Rufus, who stated that the participation of immigration officers in political discussions, campaigns, or affiliations is strictly forbidden under the LIS Act of 2016 and the service’s Code of Conduct.
According to Col. Rufus, these governing instruments clearly outline the requirement for officers to remain impartial and non-partisan in the discharge of their duties.
The release, amongst other things noted that any deviation, not only breaches institutional policy but also undermines public confidence in the service.
“The credibility and unity of the Liberia Immigration Service depend on our officers upholding the highest ethical standards,” said the Commissioner General. “Engaging in political acts risks creating a perception of favoritism, which we cannot afford as a security institution.”
The LIS administration underscored that officers found guilty of violating this directive will face stiff disciplinary measures.
These penalties could range from suspension to outright dismissal, in line with the LIS Act, Code of Conduct, and broader Civil Service regulations for security institutions.
This latest announcement follows growing concerns about increasing political interference in security institutions during election cycles.
The LIS leadership appears keen on distancing the agency from any such accusations as Liberia prepares for upcoming political events.
Commissioner Rufus reiterated that LIS officers must always embody professionalism, loyalty, and national service above personal or political interest.
He added that the service is committed to ensuring a politically neutral environment within its ranks.
The statement further emphasized the LIS’s core mission to protect Liberia’s borders and enforce immigration laws in a manner that respects the rule of law and national security priorities.
The release indicated that LIS’s firm stance is a necessary step to ensure institutional discipline and avoid politicization of the country’s border security operations.
The LIS concludes its statement by encouraging all officers to focus solely on their national duties and resist any temptation to engage in activities that could compromise the integrity of the service.
