Monrovia, Liberia – November 12, 2025: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the principles and protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasizing the nation’s respect for regional justice and rule of law.
The Liberian leader made the statement on Tuesday when he received the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Hon. Justice Ricardo Claudio Monteiro Gonçalves, and a high-powered delegation at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia.
Justice Gonçalves, accompanied by the Court’s Vice President, Chief Registrar, and Director of Administration and Finance, is in Liberia on a regional outreach and sensitization mission aimed at deepening public awareness of the Court’s role, mandate, and jurisprudence.
Speaking during the visit, Justice Gonçalves said the mission would engage law students, civil society organizations, and members of the legal community to strengthen understanding of the ECOWAS Court’s function in promoting justice and upholding the rule of law across member states.
President Boakai commended the delegation for its efforts to promote regional justice and expressed Liberia’s readiness to cooperate fully with the ECOWAS judicial system. He disclosed that the government has put in place a communication mechanism to educate citizens on the operations and importance of the Court.
“We believe in ECOWAS,” President Boakai said, adding that Liberia will continue to honor all decisions and protocols emanating from the regional body.
The ECOWAS Court of Justice is the principal legal organ of the subregional bloc, tasked with interpreting and applying the provisions of the ECOWAS Treaty and other legal instruments adopted by member states. Its work remains central to ensuring justice, regional integration, and respect for human rights within West Africa.
