The newly nominated and confirmed Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), Hon. Ernest G. Hughes, has emphasized that safety, security and improved customer services are key areas of his administration.
Hon. Hughes officially assumed leadership of the Liberia Airport Authority following the retirement of his predecessor, Hon. Jero H. Mends-Cole.
His first day in office was marked by a well-attended staff meeting held on November 17, 2025, at the LAA Administrative Building, where he outlined his priorities and set the tone for a reform-driven administration.
Addressing employees, the Managing Director stressed the importance of unity and collective responsibility in achieving the institution’s goals.
He reiterated that safeguarding the airport environment and enhancing customer satisfaction would be the central pillars of his governance.
Hughes cautioned that while his administration welcomes innovation and dedication, it will maintain a firm stance on enforcing airport safety and security regulations.
“First and foremost, the safety of all who pass through our airport, whether passengers or crew members, is non-negotiable,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to strengthening operational standards at Roberts International Airport.
During the introduction ceremony, Hon. Hughes was presented alongside the new Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Hon. John Z. Buway, and the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hon. Nyan Martein.
Their appointments signal a broader leadership restructuring intended to bolster the authority’s efficiency.
For his part, Board Chairman Martein expressed confidence in the new Managing Director’s vision, urging all staff and stakeholders to unite in pursuit of the airport’s long-term goals.
He noted that the Board stands ready to support measures that will enhance the performance, reliability, and global reputation of the Liberia Airport Authority.
With the new leadership team in place, the LAA appears poised for a period of renewed focus, strengthened institutional discipline, and strategic reforms aimed at elevating Liberia’s premier international gateway.
