CARI, SADFONS Launch Intensive Training to Boost Seed Production and Farming Skills in Grand Bassa

By Hogkins D. Tokpah

The Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI), in partnership with the Smallholder Agriculture Development for Food and Nutrition Security (SADFONS), has commenced a two-day intensive training workshop aimed at strengthening seed production and improving agricultural practices in Grand Bassa County. The training, held under the theme “Protocol for Foundation & Certified Seed Production,” seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills of local outgrowers engaged in cassava, rice, and vegetable production.

According to Mr. Joseph S. Woah, the program’s focal person, the initiative is designed to build the technical, organizational, and entrepreneurial capacity of farmers, enabling them to produce high-quality seeds that meet national standards. He emphasized that improving foundation and certified seed production is a critical step toward increasing crop yields, boosting food security, and empowering farmers economically.

A key focus of the training is the advancement of agronomic practices for rice production—a major food crop in Liberia. Facilitators are also guiding participants on how to strengthen outgrower agreements, improve contract responsibilities, and ensure transparency and accountability within the seed value chain. Additionally, the workshop highlights the importance of quality seed processing and marketing, equipping farmers with the necessary skills to access broader markets.

Another major component of the initiative is the introduction of climate-smart and sustainable farming techniques. These methods aim to help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns, protect soil fertility, and increase resilience against environmental shocks.

The workshop, which began today, brought together predominantly female farmers from several communities across Grand Bassa County, as well as local government representatives. Their participation underscores the growing role of women in agriculture and the shared commitment to strengthening food systems through training and collaboration.

Organizers say the program reflects a broader effort to uplift the county’s agricultural sector through knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and strategic partnerships that support long-term food and nutrition security.
