“Armed Robbery are Common,” U.S. Advisory Says

“Violent crime, such as armed robbery is common in urban areas, crowded markets, and public beaches. Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious crimes,”-U.S. Embassy Advisory

There was no change to Liberia’s advisory level; however, a “health” risk indicator was added, and the advisory summary was updated.

TRAVEL ADVISORY – Liberia

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

C – Crime

U – Unrest

H – Health

Exercise increased caution in Liberia due to crime, unrest, and health risks.

Advisory Summary

Crime

Violent crime, including armed robbery, is common in urban areas, crowded markets, and public beaches. Local police lack sufficient resources to respond effectively to serious crimes.

Travelers going outside the capital city of Monrovia are advised to complete their trips during daylight hours, as travel at night poses increased safety and security risks.

Unrest

Demonstrations occur regularly and have, on occasion, resulted in violence or the use of tear gas by authorities.

Large-scale demonstrations related to the local political situation may occur with little notice and can disrupt transportation and other essential services.

Health

Liberia’s health infrastructure remains inadequate. Health services, hygiene standards, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care.

Pharmacies are poorly regulated, and locally available medications may be unsafe. Medical services for both routine and emergency procedures are limited.

While health facilities are available in major cities, access to adequate healthcare is more challenging in rural areas. Public medical clinics often lack basic resources and supplies.

Travelers are encouraged to review the Health section of the Travel Guidance for additional information.

U.S. Government Employee Travel Restrictions

U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling outside the capital or between counties after dark due to safety and security risks. The only exception is travel to and from Roberts International Airport.

U.S. citizens in Liberia are advised to observe the same precautions.
