Maryland County Students to Benefit from Speaker Koon’s Scholarship Initiative

By Gareyson Y. Neufville

House Speaker Richard N. Koon has announced a major scholarship initiative aimed at boosting education and skills development in Maryland County, pledging to sponsor fifty (50) students at the Maryland County Technical and Vocational Training Institute (TVTI) in Pleebo.

The scholarship program, which focuses on technical and vocational education, is expected to equip young people with practical skills needed for employment, self-reliance, and economic growth. Areas such as construction, mechanics, agriculture, and entrepreneurship are among the key sectors expected to benefit—fields considered vital to the county’s development.

Beyond vocational training, Speaker Koon also committed to expanded academic sponsorships for higher education. Under the initiative, three (3) students from each district in Maryland County will receive scholarships to attend William V. S. Tubman University. Additionally, one (1) student from the county will benefit from an international scholarship opportunity, offering exposure to global academic standards and advanced learning experiences.

Speaker Koon made the announcement during his southeastern tour while addressing citizens at the Maryland County Administration Building in Harper. The declaration was warmly received by community members, educators, and traditional leaders, who described the initiative as timely and transformative.

The scholarship commitment followed a formal appeal from the Maryland County Traditional Council, led by its head, Chief Nelson Neal. The council cited Speaker Koon’s long-standing advocacy for education and emphasized the urgent need for the county’s youth to access opportunities that can shape their futures and enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Responding to the appeal, Speaker Koon reaffirmed his belief that education is the foundation of sustainable development and national progress.

He stressed that investing in young people is not only an investment in individual lives, but also in the long-term stability and prosperity of Liberia.
To ensure transparency and public confidence, Speaker Koon stated that the selection of scholarship beneficiaries will be conducted in collaboration with district superintendents, the Office of the County Superintendent, and county representatives. He emphasized that the process will guarantee fairness and equal opportunity for qualified students across all districts.

Residents of Maryland County have welcomed the initiative, particularly at a time when many families face financial challenges that limit access to education. Community leaders believe the program will help reduce school dropout rates, encourage academic excellence, and inspire other national leaders to invest in education.

Speaker Koon’s scholarship commitment is widely viewed as a significant step toward strengthening education, empowering youth, and building a skilled workforce capable of driving development in Maryland County and across Liberia.
