Voice of Grand Kru Radio Remains in Crisis After Senator’s Renovation Promise Falls Through

By Patrick Teah, Jr.

Senator Numene T. H. Bartekwa is facing growing criticism from media activists and concerned citizens following his failure to address longstanding challenges confronting Voice of Grand Kru 98.1 FM, the county’s leading community radio station, despite earlier assurances to renovate the facility.

Approximately four months ago, Senator Bartekwa publicly committed to renovating the station, raising hopes among staff and residents who rely on the outlet as their primary source of information. However, in a recent follow-up, the senator disclosed that he could no longer proceed with the renovation, citing what he described as the politicization of his promise by some citizens.

The decision has left Voice of Grand Kru 98.1 FM operating under what observers describe as deplorable conditions. The station’s roof is reportedly deteriorating, office space remains inadequate, and the institution lacks essential operational materials. Persistent financial constraints continue to undermine its ability to function effectively.

On December 27, 2025, Senator Bartekwa donated Twenty-Five Thousand Liberian Dollars (LD 25,000) to the station, describing the contribution as a seasonal package. Media advocates and station staff, however, argues that the amount falls far short of addressing the station’s urgent infrastructural and operational needs.

Voice of Grand Kru currently employs about fifteen staff members who continue to work despite the harsh environment. Over the years, several county officials have reportedly failed to take concrete steps to improve the station’s condition, further compounding its challenges.

Observers note that the senator’s unfulfilled promise has raised broader concerns about accountability and may have discouraged other potential humanitarian or development interventions. As a result, the future of the community radio station remains uncertain.

The situation is further exacerbated by what critics describe as the inaction of the Grand Kru County Administration, headed by Superintendent Antoinette Worweele Nimely, which has yet to undertake a meaningful intervention.

In response, concerned citizens and media activists are appealing to individuals, institutions, and development partners to urgently support Voice of Grand Kru 98.1 FM, warning that the survival of the county’s primary source of public information is at stake.
