MFDP Launches Public Expenditure Review Validation to Strengthen Fiscal Oversight

The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) has begun a five-day Public Expenditure Review (PER) Validation Workshop aimed at closely examining how government funds are utilized and strengthening fiscal discipline across public institutions.

The workshop, which opened on Tuesday, January 6, 2025, in Kakata, Margibi County, is being coordinated by the Department of Economic Management and brings together key stakeholders to review spending trends, verify data, and refine policy recommendations to improve efficiency and accountability in public financial management.

Speaking at the opening, Assistant Minister for Economic Management, Hon. Henry D.Z. Yanquoi, described the validation process as a vital step toward finalizing the PER, noting that the review serves as an important tool for determining whether public expenditures are aligned with national development priorities and delivering value for money.

Minister Yanquoi explained that the exercise allows institutions to jointly assess preliminary findings, address data gaps, and ensure the final report is credible, balanced, and relevant for policy decision-making.

He emphasized that broad participation and rigorous technical review are key to producing a reliable and impactful document.

He further highlighted the increasing need for domestic resource mobilization and responsible fiscal management, adding that the PER will help identify inefficiencies while guiding reforms to promote sustainable economic growth and improved service delivery, particularly in education and social sectors.

The Assistant Minister encouraged participants to actively engage throughout the workshop, stressing that the effectiveness of the PER depends on collaboration, transparency, and constructive dialogue among stakeholders.

In a statement, the MFDP’s Department of Economic Management praised participating institutions for their commitment and cooperation, reaffirming its readiness to provide technical support to ensure the review is completed on schedule and published promptly.

The findings from the validation workshop are expected to inform future fiscal reforms and play a key role in shaping how Liberia plans, allocates, and manages public resources in the coming years.
