Cllr. Varmah Takes Over as Chairperson of Law Reform Commission

The newly commissioned Chairperson of the Law Reform Commission (LRC), Cllr. Bornor Varmah, has officially taken over the affairs of the commission following a formal turnover ceremony held recently in Monrovia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay underscored the critical role of the Law Reform Commission in strengthening Liberia’s judicial system, noting that the judiciary remains the primary user of the country’s laws.

“The Law Reform Commission is extremely important to the Judiciary because we are the end users of the laws,” Chief Justice Gbeisay said.

Continuing, he stated: “When laws are not reformed, it becomes difficult for the courts to properly interpret and apply them.”

The Chief Justice further emphasized the need for stronger support to the commission, calling on the Government of Liberia, particularly the Executive Branch, to place greater emphasis on the importance of law reform in national governance.

For her part, Co-Chairperson and Acting Chairperson of the LRC, Cllr. Felicia Coleman, welcomed Cllr. Varmah and expressed confidence in continued teamwork within the commission.

She noted that collaboration among commissioners and staff would be key to advancing the mandate of the institution and ensuring effective law reform in the country.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Cllr. Massa Jallabah, the newly appointed Commissioner of the Law Reform Commission, who expressed gratitude to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for the confidence reposed in her.

Cllr. Jallabah pledged to work closely with her colleagues and the entire workforce of the commission to promote the interests of the institution and contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s legal and democratic development.

The Law Reform Commission is mandated to review, reform, and recommend changes to Liberia’s laws to ensure they remain relevant, coherent, and responsive to contemporary needs.
