Nimba County Unveils Sports Lodge in Montserrado, Celebrates Record Seventh County Meet Title

Nimba County has officially unveiled the Nimba Sports Lodge in Cybrise, Montserrado County, marking a major step toward strengthening sports development and improving the welfare of its athletes.

The colorful ceremony brought together county officials, lawmakers, sports administrators, athletes, and supporters, as the lodge was presented as a dedicated accommodation facility for Nimba County teams during major sporting engagements in Monrovia.

The unveiling followed Nimba County’s historic triumph at the 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet, where the county’s football team captured the championship, making Nimba the only county to win the tournament seven times since its inception.

Superintendent Hails Sports as a Unifying Force

Speaking at the program, Nimba County Superintendent Madam Kou Meapeh Gono praised the athletes for their discipline and resilience, describing the lodge as a symbol of appreciation and long-term investment in youth development.

“Sports have always united the people of Nimba beyond politics, ethnicity, and geography,” Superintendent Gono said. “This lodge is not just a building; it represents our commitment to providing comfort, dignity, and motivation for our athletes who continue to make us proud.”

She noted that the facility will serve football, kickball, basketball, and other county teams during competitions hosted in Montserrado County.

Lawmakers Pledge Continued Support

Several Nimba County lawmakers in attendance reaffirmed their commitment to sports development, citing the county’s consistent success as the result of unity, planning, and sustained support for young talent.

Representative Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue described the football team’s seventh title as a legacy achievement.

“Nimba County has shown that with belief in our young people, excellence is possible,” he said. “We will continue to support initiatives that empower athletes and promote peace through sports.”

Strong Performances Across Disciplines

County officials also commended Nimba’s overall performance at the National County Sports Meet. Alongside the football team’s championship victory, the kickball team finished third, while the basketball team placed second.

“These results show that Nimba’s strength goes beyond football,” a senior sports official said. “Our teams displayed skill, determination, and competitive spirit across disciplines.”

Athletes Welcome New Facility

Officials of the Nimba County football team expressed gratitude to county leadership, describing the lodge as a major morale booster for athletes who often face accommodation challenges during competitions in Monrovia.

“Winning the county meet seven times is no small achievement,” a team official noted. “Facilities like this motivate players to give their best and uphold the pride of Nimba County.”

A New Chapter for Nimba Sports

The program concluded with a symbolic tour of the lodge and renewed calls for sustained investment in youth and sports infrastructure.

With its latest National County Sports Meet victory and the unveiling of the Nimba Sports Lodge, Nimba County has further cemented its status as Liberia’s most successful sporting county, setting a high standard for future competitions.
