Monrovia, Liberia — The Government of Liberia has announced its intention to contest a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC), representing the Western Region for the 2026–2028 term.
In a statement issued Monday, February 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Liberia’s candidacy will be presented during the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, scheduled for February 11–12, 2026, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to the ministry, Liberia’s bid reflects its long-standing commitment to promoting peace, security and solidarity across the African continent. The announcement comes at a time when Liberia is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term.
Officials say holding seats on both the AU PSC and the UNSC would give Liberia a strategic opportunity to strengthen coordination between the African Union and the African members of the UN Security Council, commonly referred to as the A3, thereby amplifying Africa’s collective voice in global peace and security discussions.
Over the past two decades, Liberia has played an active role in international peace efforts, contributing personnel to peacekeeping missions and engaging in multilateral diplomacy. The government says these experiences have positioned the country as a reliable partner in advancing regional and international stability.
Liberia’s own postwar recovery and peacebuilding experience is also cited as a key strength of its candidacy. Since emerging from conflict, the country has invested in early warning and conflict prevention systems, reconciliation and transitional justice mechanisms, and the strengthening of democratic institutions and civil society.
“If elected, Liberia will bring practical experience in conflict resolution, institution-building and reconciliation to the Council,” the ministry said, adding that Liberia’s approach will be guided by the principles of African unity, solidarity and collective responsibility.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appealed to African Union member states to support Liberia’s bid, expressing confidence that the country would serve on the AU Peace and Security Council with integrity, dedication and a collaborative spirit.
