The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has challenged the Unity Party–led government to compensate citizens whose homes and properties have been destroyed amid a growing wave of land disputes across the country.
Speaking during the week at the party’s temporary headquarters in Monrovia, CDC National Chairman Janga Kowo said many Liberians have been rendered homeless as a result of disputed land claims and subsequent demolitions, which he described as alarming and devastating to ordinary citizens.
Kowo referenced the recent demolition of residential homes in the Saye Town community in Sinkor, carried out following a court order over disputed land ownership.
According to him, residents affected by the exercise have complained of severe hardship, loss of shelter, and disruption to their livelihoods.
“The people are suffering. Families have been displaced, properties destroyed, and livelihoods affected,” Kowo said. “Government cannot look away while citizens are left homeless in the name of development or legal enforcement.”
The CDC chairman called on the Unity Party government to urgently intervene, ensure that due process is fully respected, and provide adequate compensation to displaced residents to enable them to resettle and rebuild their lives.
He stressed that it is the fundamental responsibility of any national government to protect its citizens and improve their living conditions, particularly in sensitive matters involving land and housing.
Kowo further accused the Unity Party administration of neglecting the welfare of ordinary Liberians, especially in situations where demolitions are carried out to pave the way for development projects.
“The government has a duty to balance development with human dignity,” he said, adding that citizens should not be made victims of policy failures and weak land governance systems.
He concluded by assuring that the CDC would continue to speak out on behalf of affected communities and ensure that the concerns of ordinary Liberians remain part of the national conversation.
