Burkina Faso secures $1.16 billion UN-supported financing deal to boost food sovereignty

The Sahelian Republic of Burkina Faso has signed a 5-year groundbreaking US$1.16 billion UN-supported deal to overhaul its food systems. The program is aimed at gaining food sovereignty.

The CFAF 850.2bn (around $1.16bn) financing agreement was signed in Ouagadougou by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, covering 2025-2030.

The billion-dollar deal, which seeks to boost food production, processing, distribution, and consumption in the medium term, focuses on three major areas: sustainable food systems, humanitarian-development-peace resilience, and stabilization of fragile regions.

The food sovereignty initiative will target regions with high agricultural potential and also areas facing acute food insecurity as a result of climate change.
