Grand Kru College Harvests Cassava

By Patrick Teah

The Agriculture Department of Grand Kru Technical College has successfully completed a cassava harvesting initiative cultivated through intensive practical training and sustainable farming methods.

The harvest, carried out on the college’s agricultural site in Barclayville, underscores the institution’s commitment to hands-on education, food security, and community empowerment in Grand Kru County.

According to the Chairman of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Pius W. Nyanfore, the initiative forms part of the college’s broader strategy to integrate classroom instruction with practical field experience.

He disclosed that a portion of the harvested cassava will be sold to the college administration, the county administration, and other prominent business owners within the county. Proceeds from the sales, he noted, will be reinvested into ongoing agricultural activities and student training programs.

In addition, Mr. Nyanfore revealed that part of the produce will be donated to inmates at the Barclayville Central Prison as part of the college’s social responsibility and community outreach efforts.

“This initiative demonstrates that our students are not only learning theory but actively contributing to local food production and development,” he said.

The cassava project is part of the department’s sustainable agriculture program, which emphasizes modern farming techniques, teamwork, and innovation. Students participating in the initiative gained hands-on experience in cultivation, farm management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

The Administration of Grand Kru Technical College reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening technical and vocational education that equips students with employable skills while supporting agricultural advancement in the county.

As agriculture remains a key pillar of Liberia’s rural economy, initiatives such as this are viewed as vital to promoting food security and empowering young people with productive livelihoods.
