Liberian Lawyer, Humanitarian Applauds Government Over ‘Yellow Machines’ Drive; Calls for Accountability and Strong Oversight

A prominent Liberian lawyer and humanitarian, Cllr. Kunkunyon Teh, has commended the national government under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for the procurement of heavy-duty earth-moving equipment, widely known as “yellow machines,” describing the initiative as a meaningful step toward strengthening infrastructure development across the country.

While applauding the national government’s effort, Cllr. Teh said a stronger implementation measures are necessary to ensure the initiative delivers sustainable, long-term benefits for Liberians.

Speaking to our reporter in the county, Cllr. Teh characterized the arrival of the machines as a landmark development, particularly for southeastern Liberia, a region that has long struggled with poor road connectivity and limited access to essential services.

“This is truly remarkable,” Cllr. Teh stated. “I commend the Government for taking a positive step toward enhancing infrastructure development. I am especially pleased for the Southeast. This is what intentional progress looks like, and certainly a more prudent way to invest taxpayers’ money.”

The “yellow machines” initiative forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure strategy aimed at rehabilitating road networks, improving access to rural communities, and stimulating economic activity nationwide.

In counties such as River Gee, better road conditions are expected to ease transportation challenges, shorten travel time, and create new opportunities for farmers, traders, and small businesses.

However, Cllr. Teh cautioned that the success of the initiative will depend not merely on the acquisition of equipment, but on the systems put in place to manage and maintain them effectively.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive operational framework that ensures transparency, accountability, and technical efficiency.

“Procurement alone does not guarantee impact,” he noted. “We must acknowledge that there is still more work to be done.

The real results will depend on how efficiently these machines are managed and how strategically they are deployed to serve the communities that need them most.”

The legal practitioner further underscored the importance of establishing clear guidelines for usage, investing in skilled operators, and implementing routine maintenance schedules to protect the government’s investment and prevent rapid deterioration of the equipment.

He also called for strong monitoring mechanisms to promote responsible use and ensure that the machinery is directed toward priority infrastructure projects that will deliver measurable improvements in citizens’ daily lives.

Cllr. Teh’s remarks come amid heightened public interest in national infrastructure development, particularly in underserved regions where inadequate road networks have historically constrained economic growth and limited access to healthcare, education, and markets.

As the government expected to roll out the initiative nationwide, many Liberians will be closely observing how effectively the program transitions from promise to tangible development outcomes on the ground.
