Liberian Army Chief Crosses Makona River by Canoe to Promote Peace with Guinea

By Morlu Freeman

Monrovia, Liberia — Liberia’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Brigadier General Davidson Fayiah Forleh, reportedly led a small delegation to neighboring Guinea Thursday , March 12, in a symbolic effort to promote peace, dialogue, and good neighborliness amid rising border tensions between the two countries.

According to sources familiar with the mission, the Liberian military delegation crossed the Makona River by canoe to meet with Guinean counterparts along the frontier. The visit comes after tensions reportedly escalated in border communities beginning on March 10, raising concerns among residents and local authorities on both sides.

Officials say the purpose of the trip was to open direct communication channels with Guinean military leaders and reinforce the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

The Makona River forms part of the boundary between Liberia and Guinea, and has historically been a crossing point for local communities engaged in trade and family ties across the border.
