National Fish Market Day Draws Large Crowd at Invincible Park

MONROVIA, Liberia — The second edition of the 2026 National Fish Market Day, organized by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, brought together scores of residents, fishmongers, and local fishermen at the Invincible Park in Monrovia, creating a vibrant marketplace centered on the promotion of locally caught fish.

The event, which is part of ongoing efforts by the fisheries authority to strengthen Liberia’s domestic fish industry, attracted a large turnout of citizens eager to purchase fresh fish directly from vendors. From early morning hours, stalls were lined with a variety of freshly caught seafood as buyers moved from table to table negotiating prices and selecting their preferred fish.

Organizers said the initiative is intended to highlight the importance of Liberia’s fisheries sector while also providing an opportunity for fishermen and fish sellers to connect directly with consumers.

Many of the residents who attended the event welcomed the initiative, noting that it offers an alternative to the frozen fish commonly sold in supermarkets and shops. According to several buyers, purchasing fish directly from local fishermen not only guarantees freshness but also helps support the livelihoods of those working within the local fishing industry.

Some citizens described the atmosphere as both exciting and beneficial, saying the event made it easier for families to access affordable fresh fish while interacting directly with vendors who harvest and sell the products.

Participants also praised the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority for what they described as a meaningful step toward revitalizing local fish markets across the country. Many called on the authority to sustain and expand the initiative, suggesting that regular fish market days could significantly boost local production and sales.

Observers believe that initiatives like the National Fish Market Day can play a key role in promoting locally sourced seafood, strengthening Liberia’s fisheries value chain, and encouraging greater public appreciation for the country’s fishing communities.

If sustained, supporters say the program could contribute to improving food availability while simultaneously creating more economic opportunities for fishermen, fishmongers, and others involved in Liberia’s growing fisheries sector.
