MONROVIA — Tension mounted inside the courtroom Friday as prosecutors and defense lawyers delivered emotional closing arguments before a 15-member jury in the ongoing corruption trial involving five defendants accused of economic sabotage, criminal conspiracy, and theft of public funds.
Leading the prosecution, Cllr. Richard J. Scott, Jr. urged jurors to return a guilty verdict, arguing that the accused allegedly diverted over US$6 million intended for public service.
“Find these people guilty to send a signal that public office is not a place for quick enrichment, but rather a place for service,” Scott told the court. He added that the money allegedly stolen could have purchased more than 20 DNA machines to improve Liberia’s healthcare system.
Defense lawyer Cllr. Arthur Johnson, however, appealed passionately for acquittal, warning jurors against outside influence.
“If you return a not-guilty verdict, the whole country will celebrate you,” Johnson declared. “Don’t allow anyone to use your hand. Don’t return a guilty verdict.”
The jury is expected to begin deliberations following the conclusion of final legal instructions from the court.
