Unity Party, UP Candidate Nya Twayen is ahead in Nimba County, preliminary from the National Elections Commission says.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) unveiled its initial preliminary results from the recently concluded by-elections, placing the Unity Party candidate ahead of the competition.
On Wednesday, the Commission disclosed voting outcomes from 157 out of 736 polling stations within the county.
According to the NEC, Nya D. Twayen, the Unity Party candidate, has garnered 19,966 votes thus far, while his closest rival, Samuel Kogar, has secured 3,737 votes.
The senatorial by-election in Nimba County was triggered by the ascension of former Senator Jeremiah Koon to the vice presidency following the victory of the Unity Party Government.
The election of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his running mate resulted in a vacancy, prompting the need for a by-election in the county.
On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the citizens of Nimba exercised their democratic right to elect a new senator to fill the void left by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koon.
In a separate development, the final tally of votes in District 1, Grand Gedeh County, indicates Jeremiah Sokan as the victor with 3,168 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Ameliah Beh, who obtained 1,313 votes out of the 10,307 valid votes cast.
Independent candidate Jeremiah Sokan is set to succeed the late Representative Madison Gwion, whose passing was marred by controversy in the county.
The total votes cast in District One, Grand Gedeh County, were recorded as 10,536, representing a significant turnout.
Furthermore, the National Elections Commission affirmed that all elections conducted in the two counties transpired under a peaceful atmosphere.
