What should have been a day of joy for a Maryland County family turned into an unimaginable tragedy when 54-year-old Beatrice Morrison lost her life shortly after giving birth to her baby at home in J.J. Dorsen Community.
Instead of celebrating the arrival of a newborn, loved ones were left grieving the loss of a mother whose final hours have now become the subject of a criminal investigation.
According to the Liberia National Police, Morrison went into labor during the night of July 22, 2026. As the hours passed, family members and those assisting her reportedly became concerned and suggested that she be taken to J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital or that a community health worker be contacted.
Police investigators say Morrison reportedly declined at first, explaining that she had previously delivered children at home and wanted to wait for her husband, Abraham Collins.
Witness Teta Elliott, who helped Morrison during labor, told investigators that she became increasingly worried after Morrison’s water broke and recommended that she be taken to the hospital. Elliott alleged that when she contacted Collins by telephone, he instructed those present not to transport his wife to the hospital but to wait until he arrived.
According to the police charge sheet, Morrison gave birth before Collins reached the home. Investigators allege that Collins cut the baby’s umbilical cord after arriving.
Moments that should have been filled with the cries of a healthy newborn quickly turned into panic when Morrison reportedly became unconscious. Community Health Promoter Mariam Fofana told police investigators she found the mother lying on the floor in a pool of blood, unresponsive, with the newborn beside her. She immediately called for an ambulance.
Despite efforts to save her, Maryland County Health Officer Dr. Methodius George confirmed that Morrison was pronounced dead on arrival at J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital at about 2:07 p.m. Medical personnel also reported that the placenta had not yet been delivered.
While the community mourns the loss of a mother, there is also a small measure of hope. Dr. George confirmed that Morrison’s newborn is receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital and is responding positively.
Following its investigation, the Liberia National Police charged Morrison’s husband, Abraham Collins, with murder and criminal facilitation. Police allege that he prevented his wife from being taken to a medical facility during labor and cut the umbilical cord even though he is not a licensed health practitioner.
Investigators also stated that Collins acknowledged stopping her from being transported before medical assistance was eventually sought.
The case has been forwarded to court, where Collins will answer the charges. Under Liberian law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.
Beyond the courtroom, Morrison’s death has sparked renewed conversations in Maryland County about the importance of timely access to skilled maternal healthcare and the potentially life-saving role of seeking medical attention during childbirth complications.
