MONROVIA, Liberia — Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Gbeme Horace-Kollie has urged unemployed or non-income-earning married men to report wives who are employed but allegedly fail to provide support for their families.
Minister Horace-Kollie made the statement while addressing the issue of family support, encouraging men to seek assistance from the Ministry of Gender when they believe their spouses are not contributing to household needs.
“Men, particularly married men, if you do not have work or are not earning an income, and your wife is working or earning an income and she is not supporting you and the children, please be courageous enough to come to the Ministry of Gender and report it,” she said.
The Minister referenced Chapter 5.3(e) of Liberia’s Domestic Relations Law, saying the Ministry would invoke the provision to ensure eligible individuals receive appropriate support.
She, however, added a legal caveat, stating: “He who comes into equity must come with clean hands.”
The remarks highlight the ministry’s position that family support obligations should be addressed regardless of gender where applicable.
The statement has generated public discussion about the rights and responsibilities of spouses under Liberia’s domestic relations framework.
The ministry has not provided further details on how many such cases it has received or the specific procedures men should follow when filing complaints.
