Opposition Blasts Boakai Over Suspension of Tenured Officials

Liberia’s President Joseph Nyuma Boakai finds himself under immense pressure of controversy as his recent decision to suspend officials in tenured positions triggers a cascade of condemnation from various quarters.

Amidst calls for reconsideration from civil society organizations and opposition parties, Boakai’s actions have sparked a heated debate over adherence to legal norms and democratic principles.

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) set the stage for the unfolding drama by urging President Boakai to reassess his recent appointments, citing concerns over transparency and accountability.

However, Boakai’s move to suspend officials has not only failed to quell the unrest but has intensified.

In a rare display of unity, the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and the Movement for Democratic Change (MPC) have joined forces to denounce Boakai’s decision.

Their joint statement highlights the perceived infringement on legal principles and warns against undermining the authority of the Supreme Court.

The suspension of Garrison Yealue and Elizabeth Dorkin, among others, from their positions at the Governance Commission and the LTA, respectively, has raised eyebrows and drawn sharp criticism. Allegations of financial irregularities and malpractices further complicate the situation, prompting demands for thorough investigations.

Opposition leaders, including MPC’s Political Standard Bearer Someone Freeman, have underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting democratic norms.

They argue that any changes to government tenure positions must adhere to legal procedures to safeguard the integrity of Liberia’s democracy.

ANC and MPC joint assertion that they will “put the president’s feet to the fire” underscores the opposition’s determination to challenge Boakai’s decision through both political and legal means.

The message is clear: accountability and adherence to the law are non-negotiable principles that must be upheld for the common good of the Liberian people, they stated.

As the pressure mounts on President Boakai, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Liberia’s commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.
