MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung says he will not press charges against a young man arrested over allegations of cyberbullying involving AI-generated images and videos posted on Facebook.
In a statement, Vice President Koung said he contacted the Inspector General of Police, who confirmed that the arrest was made under Liberia’s Cybercrime Law.
While acknowledging the police’s responsibility to enforce the law, Koung said he had no desire to pursue charges against the young man or anyone else for creating or sharing such content about him.
The Vice President said he has therefore requested the young man’s immediate release.
Koung noted that public officials are often subjected to criticism, ridicule and provocation, adding that leadership requires tolerance, restraint and compassion.
“Our laws must protect citizens, but leadership must also exercise tolerance, restraint and compassion,” Koung said.
He concluded: “Again, this is part of the package.”
