HARPER, Maryland County — Maryland County is set to benefit from a major healthcare infrastructure investment following the Government of Liberia’s decision to construct a US$1.5 million Infectious Disease Clinic at the J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Harper.
The proposed facility is expected to strengthen the capacity of the county’s regional referral hospital to prevent, detect, diagnose, treat, and manage infectious diseases while improving infection prevention and control measures.

On Friday, October 2, authorities of the Maryland County local government received a delegation comprising representatives of the Ministry of Health, TEC International, PM Group of Companies, and the Maryland County Health Team.

The delegation briefed county officials on the planned project and its expected impact on healthcare delivery in Maryland County and the wider southeastern region.

If completed, the clinic will provide additional infrastructure and specialized capacity for infectious disease response, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel outside the county to access certain healthcare services.

The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Liberia’s health infrastructure and expand access to essential healthcare services, particularly in the southeastern region, where J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital serves as a key referral facility.

The clinic is being funded through a grant from the Government of Japan, as part of Japan’s support to Liberia’s health sector and efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

TEC International Project Manager Keizo Inoue highlighted the importance of the initiative, while Liberia’s Ambassador to Japan, Edward Wade Appleton, was acknowledged for his role in negotiations that contributed to securing the grant assistance.

Maryland County Superintendent Nathaniel Toe Jr. welcomed the project, describing it as an important investment in the county’s healthcare system.
Superintendent Toe also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and the well-being of residents.

He commended the Ministry of Health and the Government of Liberia for their continued support to Maryland County.

Once completed, the Infectious Disease Clinic is expected to become an important addition to J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital, strengthening the hospital’s specialized healthcare services and its ability to respond to infectious disease threats.
