Farmington Education District Celebrates Teachers’ Day

Harbel City, Margibi County: The Farmington Education District in Margibi County on Monday, October 5, 2026, joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Teachers’ Day, honoring educators for their contributions to Liberia’s educational development.

The celebration, held at the Harbel Multilateral High School in Harbel City, brought together teachers from public, private and faith-based schools across the district to reflect on the vital role educators play in society.

The program was organized by the Office of the Farmington Education District, headed by District Education Officer Hon. Joe Flomo.

Speaking at the ceremony, Flomo said the strength and quality of Liberia’s education system largely depend on teachers, stressing that educators deserve to be celebrated and supported.

He called on stakeholders, including government, school authorities and community members, to work with the Farmington Education District in promoting educational activities.

Flomo also highlighted the performance of schools within the district in the just-ended West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), attributing the results to the commitment and training of teachers.

“Because we have good, well-trained teachers, that’s why we have good results,” he said.

He urged local and national governments to prioritize the welfare of teachers and called on school owners to address the needs and concerns of educators.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Henric Marcus Speare, proprietor of St. Paul Ecumenical High School, spoke on the theme, “Who Is a Teacher?”

Dr. Speare focused his message on the need to improve teachers’ living conditions, emphasizing that educators “deserve better living.”

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on October 5 to recognize and appreciate teachers and their important contribution to education and society.

The observance began in 1994, when UNESCO established October 5 as World Teachers’ Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
