The ECOWAS Court of Justice was first proposed in the 1975 Treaty of Lagos, set up formally through a 1991 protocol, and started operating in January 2001.
As the main judicial body of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), it was established to settle disputes over how treaties, protocols, and economic regulations are interpreted and applied.
ECOWAS currently has 12 member states, following the official withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger on January 29, 2025.
