Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono has pledged LD$400,000 and a brand-new rice mill to the Concerned Women of Buu-Yao in District #5, as part of efforts to strengthen local agricultural production and support women farmers.
The pledge was announced Monday during the launch of the harvest of a large upland rice farm cultivated by the women’s group in Bealay Town, Nimba County.
Addressing the gathering, Superintendent Gono assured the women that the LD$400,000 financial assistance, alongside the rice mill, would be made available early next week.
She said the support forms part of her plans to work closely with the women’s group to improve agricultural activities and increase food production in the area.
Superintendent Gono also disclosed that she would engage the Ministry of Agriculture through the office of the County Agriculture Coordinator to explore additional support for the women, particularly in expanding their farming activities.
Meanwhile, the county superintendent acknowledged Representative Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue for his contributions to the Concerned Women of Buu-Yao, revealing that the lawmaker has provided support amounting to more than L$1.3 million.
The combined support from Superintendent Gono and Representative Kwagrue is expected to strengthen the group’s agricultural operations, particularly in rice production and processing.
The women’s group is expected to benefit from the pledged financial assistance and rice mill once delivered, potentially reducing the challenges associated with processing locally harvested rice.
The commitment comes amid growing calls for increased investment in local agriculture and support for rural women farmers to strengthen food production and improve livelihoods in Liberia.
